PAPERBAG STARS – stunning stars from grocery bags
Who knew paper bags could be used so creatively?
Details
You will need:
- 7 paper bags all the same size – use sweetie bags, brown bags from a greengrocer, food delivery bags, even paper compost caddy sacks etc. Big or small, plain or coloured will work, as long as you have 7 bags which are all the same size and shape.
- Scissors
- Glue stick or PVA
- String or ribbon to hang
Instructions:
- Lay the paper bags flat with the opening at the top. If the bags have a wide base and a gusset, fold this up so that the base is flat. Have all the bags facing the same way with the gussets (if there is one) facing up.
- Glue the bags on top of each other using a thin line of glue along the bottom of the bag and then another up the centre of each bag so the glue join is an upside down “T”. Glue one bag and place another carefully on top. Then glue that one and place another on that. Make sure to line up the bags carefully so that they sit one on top of the other with the opening at the top. You may find it easier to stick the bags into groups of 3 or 4 so that you do not have too many layers to cut out.
- Cut out your star shape through all the layers. Ensure you leave the bottom intact where you have glued as this is the centre of the star – do not cut out this side. Keep your cut out shape simple to start with as you can always add more cuts to make the shape more interesting if you want to. Just a simple cut out shape can have a huge impact! Using a hole-punch makes an interesting pattern. Make sure all the bags are cut the same way and are glued together into one pile. Add a final glue upside down “T” on the top bag and open up your star to stick it to the bottom bag. Hey presto! You have a beautiful star.
- Tie string to hang it. You can add more stars and layer them up.
